Pharmacy Mirror reveals: The problem with most standard shower heads!

Daily showering –

What could be harmful about it? The answer: Much more than you think!

Showering is part of the daily routine – hardly anyone thinks about what actually comes into contact with the skin through the water. After all, German tap water is considered one of the most strictly controlled food products. And that is true – technically speaking.

But “controlled” does not mean “pure.” The tap water that comes from the shower every day contains a number of substances that are tolerated in small amounts when simply drinking – but can have a very different effect when in extensive contact with the skin under warm water.

The most common substances in German tap water include chlorine and chloramines, which are added for disinfection, lime scale and heavy metals such as lead or copper from old pipes, nitrates and pesticides from agriculture, as well as an increasing amount of microplastics and pharmaceutical residues, which enter the water cycle through the sewage system and are not completely filtered out by conventional treatment plants.

But where do these substances actually come from? The journey begins long before the faucet. Nitrates and pesticides from agriculture seep through the soil into the groundwater – in many regions of Germany, the measured values have been above the EU limit for years. Industrial chemicals like PFAS as well as pharmaceutical residues – including antibiotics, hormones, and painkillers – enter the natural water cycle through wastewater and are only partially filtered out by conventional sewage treatment plants.

In the water treatment plant, the water is treated but simultaneously disinfected with chlorine – a substance that itself becomes a contaminant. On the long journey through the pipe network, additional pollutants are added: In millions of German households, especially in buildings from the pre-war or post-war era, lead or copper pipes are still in use, from which metals gradually dissolve into the water. What finally comes out of the shower is the result of all these stages – and reaches the skin unfiltered.

When showering, the pores open due to the warm water. The skin – our largest organ – is in direct contact for several minutes with everything the tap water has picked up on its long journey.

Everyone knows it: skin irritation, itching, dandruff & dry skin after showering

Many people know the feeling: after showering, the skin feels dry, tight, slightly itchy, or appears red. Dandruff, a dry scalp sensation, or excessive sebum production are often attributed to the wrong shampoo, water that is too hot, or simply the skin type.

Chlorine attacks the skin’s natural protective barrier – the so-called hydrolipid film, which protects it from drying out. Hard water, which occurs in large parts of Germany, leaves mineral residues on the skin and can impair the skin’s appearance in the long term. People with sensitive skin, atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis often react particularly sensitively to these stresses.

During daily showers, these pollutants come into direct contact with the largest organ of the human body - our skin.

They directly attack the pores and the natural acid mantle of the skin and clog them.

This causes the natural protective barrier of our skin to weaken with every shower, increases moisture loss, and leads to micro-injuries, which result in dry skin and irritation.

Thus, daily showering becomes a burden for the skin - instead of care.

The last point in this chain before the water reaches our skin is the showerhead. It is the only thing that can be installed directly before this contact without any modifications – and this is exactly where a good filtered showerhead comes into play.

Why a good showerhead is more important than many think:

Those who shower daily and at the same time wonder about persistent dry or irritated skin should consider what their skin comes into contact with every morning. Untreated German tap water – depending on the region and building infrastructure – contains a combination of disinfectants, lime, trace heavy metals, and other residues.

A high-performance filtered shower head can retain most of these substances right at the outlet. Good models combine several filter stages: KDF filters neutralize chlorine and heavy metals through a catalytic process, activated carbon binds organic compounds, and ceramic or sediment filters retain coarse particles.

The result is not pure water – but noticeably softer, less contaminated water that treats the skin much more gently. For people with dry, sensitive, or irritation-prone skin, this one replacement alone can make a measurable difference.

🥇Test Winner: Klair Filter Shower Head

Overall rating: 9.8/10 points

The German brand Klair impresses in terms of quality, design, and efficiency. The startup is considered a pioneer when it comes to modern filter shower heads in the German-speaking region – and rightly so! They have developed a unique shower head with scientifically proven Tri-Ion Filtration Technology, which is one of a kind.

What is Tri-Ion Filtration Technology – and why is it so effective?

The Tri-Ion Filtration is a modern water purification technology specifically designed to make shower water noticeably purer, softer, and more skin-friendly. It is based on a three-stage filtration system that combines different filter media—each with a specific task:

1. Ion Exchange Layer:

This layer selectively removes lime scale, lead, copper, and heavy metals, which according to current medical studies are the most common causes of dry skin, itching, and brittle hair. They attack and destroy the skin’s natural lipid film, which depletes moisture and triggers micro-inflammations.

2. Activated Carbon Filter:

Activated carbon absorbs chlorine, medication residues, odors, and taste substances from the water, which attack the skin’s natural protective barrier, clog pores, and cause irritation and skin discomfort.

3. Tri-Ion Fine Filter

The Tri-Ion fine filter regulates the water’s pH value. Conventional shower heads often cause an increased pH level in the water, which can damage or even destroy your skin’s acid mantle. This can especially lead to severe dryness, tightness, and redness in people with sensitive or mature skin (40+).

The shower head also impresses in everyday use with its practical advantages: The easy installation allows tool-free mounting in seconds and fits all common connections. For additional comfort, it offers three different shower modes that provide a pleasant yet powerful water flow. Moreover, the shower head is particularly water-saving and can reduce consumption by up to 50% without sacrificing performance.

Thus, the system combines modern filter technology, high comfort, and efficiency, making it the ideal choice for anyone who values better water quality and gentle care for skin and hair.

🥈 2nd Place: Doyoo Filtered Shower Head

Overall rating: 7.5/10 points

The Doyoo showerhead is often advertised as an affordable alternative to higher-end models. With a built-in filter cartridge, sleek design, and easy handling, it is mainly aimed at users who want to take a first step towards filtered shower water – without spending too much money.

But how does the model perform in everyday use? And can it really compete with other solutions?

The Doyoo showerhead uses a simple filtration system that, according to the manufacturer, helps to reduce chlorine, limescale, and some coarse impurities from tap water . This is achieved through an integrated filter cartridge that mechanically passes the water through a fine mesh.

What sounds like a sensible measure at first glance quickly reaches its limits in practice: The filtration performance is limited, and additional features such as multi-stage contaminant reduction or skin-care minerals are completely missing here. This may be sufficient for simple needs, but those who value noticeable water quality and effective skin protection will probably not be permanently satisfied with this model.

Easy installation: The showerhead can be installed without special tools, making replacement straightforward.

Integrated filter: A built-in filter can help reduce certain impurities in the water.

Compact Design: The slim construction fits into many bathrooms and saves space.

Material: Good workmanship and stainless steel ensure high quality

Lightweight: The low weight can make handling easier, especially for children or elderly people.

Limited filtration performance: The filter does not effectively remove all contaminants, which can affect water quality.

Plastic processing: The use of plastic materials could limit the durability and stability of the product.

Limited customization options: Various spray types or adjustment options that could personalize the shower experience are missing.

Unclear filter replacement intervals: There are no clear indications of how often the filter should be changed, which makes maintenance difficult.

Value for Money: Insufficient pollutant filtration of the water results in a poor cost-benefit ratio

By combining KDF 55, amino acids, and activated carbon fibers, it aims to remove over 90% of chlorine, heavy metals, and other impurities from tap water. This can help protect skin and hair from the effects of hard water.

Despite these features, the Hello Klean showerhead falls short of the test winner in some areas, especially regarding filter depth, additional features, and material quality.

Easy Installation: The showerhead can be installed without tools in less than a minute, making replacement straightforward.

Integrated Filtration System: The combination of KDF 55, amino acids, and activated carbon fibers can help reduce certain impurities in the water.

4th Place: NearMoon Filter Shower Head

Overall rating: 6.0/10 points

At first glance, the NearMoon filter showerhead promises a lot: a modern design, an integrated filter system with vitamin C gel, and a pleasant scent are supposed to enhance the shower experience and protect skin and hair. Especially for people with sensitive skin or problems caused by hard water, this initially sounds like a sensible solution.

But in everyday use, it quickly becomes clear: many of the expectations are not met. The filter performance remains rather superficial, with the focus more on aroma and appearance than on genuine water purification. Those looking for noticeable relief for their skin or sustainable pollutant reduction will be disappointed here.

In direct comparison with higher-quality models, the NearMoon comes across more as a lifestyle product with a wellness touch, but functionally it clearly falls behind.

Flavored Vitamin C Filter: The light scent can make the shower experience a bit more pleasant – a matter of taste.

Quick installation: The shower head can be installed without tools.

Visually appealing: The design is modern and available in various colors.

Very limited filtration performance: The focus is more on scent and show effect than on actual pollutant reduction. Fine particles, microplastics, or heavy metals are hardly filtered effectively.

No certified filter technology: There is no information on independent tests or scientifically proven mechanisms of action.

Plastic processing feels cheap: According to many users, the material feels more "toy-like" – which is not suitable for daily use.

Marketing focus on lifestyle instead of function: The product is heavily promoted through design and comfort aspects, not through objective filter performance.

No long-term solution: Those who want to alleviate skin problems or water-related irritations in the long run will not notice any significant improvement here.

Fragrances can be irritating: The vitamin C core contains artificial fragrances that can be problematic for sensitive skin or allergies.

Value for money: Despite simple technology and inexpensive materials, the price is in the mid-range – considering the actual filtering performance and function, the shower head offers comparatively little value.

5th Place: Wenko Automatic Cleaning Shower Head

Overall rating: 5.2/10 points

The Wenko Automatic Cleaning showerhead presents itself as visually appealing with its matte black design and promises a gentle shower experience through 324 microfine nozzles as well as three selectable spray types. These features are meant to transform the bathroom into a personal wellness oasis.

In practice, however, the showerhead does not fully meet expectations. While the design is convincing, the functions fall short of the promises. The spray types differ only minimally, and an effective filter function for water treatment is completely missing. For users who value a noticeable improvement in water quality, this model therefore offers little added value.

Modern Design: The matte black finish gives the shower head a contemporary look that fits many bathroom styles.

Easy installation: Thanks to the universal connection (½"), the shower head can be easily connected to standard shower hoses.

Quiet operation: The design ensures a low-noise water flow, making the shower experience more pleasant.

No filter function: The showerhead does not have an integrated filtration system to reduce chlorine, limescale, or other impurities in the tap water.

Limited beam types: Although three beam types are offered, they differ only slightly, which limits versatility.

Material quality: The use of ABS plastic appears less premium and could affect the product's durability.

No additional skincare features: It lacks features such as enriching the water with vitamin C or other nourishing additives that are present in other models.

Value for money: Given the limited features, the price seems less justified compared to more powerful models.
